Artistic Statement

Born and raised in Kolkata, India, in the early 1980s, I grew up watching people navigate survival one day at a time during rapid urban expansion. Those early experiences forged my minimalist creative style. I continue to create stories without visual extravagance, in which ordinary people face extraordinary circumstances and encounter forces much larger than themselves.

My theatrical practices explore systemic, geopolitical, and social crises, distilling them into raw and intimate human experiences. I believe that the greatest power of live theatre lies in its intimate, direct connection with the audience, achieved by removing on-stage spectacles and presenting a story anchored in experiential truth and the raw vulnerability of the performance. I trust my audience’s imagination to build my worlds from empty space, where time and place dissolve, and sharp dialogue, precise silence, and primal instincts blur the boundaries between the characters and the audience. I want every audience member to whisper, “I have seen, heard, or experienced that.”

Founded in 2019, Hattimatim-Team is a Maryland-based bilingual, independent theatre company that develops original, thought-provoking scripts about complex social and geopolitical issues and presents minimalist, intimate performances to national and global audiences.  Their touring production, “Empty Night,” has established the company’s presence on the national fringe circuit, reflecting the company’s minimalist aesthetic and emotionally direct performance style.

As an independent theatre company, Hattimatim-Team explores universal themes and transforms traditional storytelling to bridge cultural divides. The company creates highly complex yet accessible work that both entertains and asks lingering questions about the collective responsibility humans bear to the world and its inhabitants.
